Richard Luby Violin Symposium

Named in honor of its founder, violinist Richard Luby, the Symposium offers participants intensive instruction, performance opportunities, and exchange of interpretation ideas ranging across five centuries of violin repertoire. Artist-Faculty include Antti Tikkannen and Minna Pensola (Meta4Quartet, Sibelius Academy), Nicholas DiEugenio (UNC-CH), Aaron Berofsky (University of Michigan), Fabian Lopez (UNC-G), Timothy Kantor (University of Arizona), Shannon Thomas (Florida State) and Kevin Lawrence (UNCSA).

Named in honor of its founder, violinist Richard Luby, the Symposium offers participants an intensive one-week immersion focused on individual instrumental and musical growth within the context of a supportive and nurturing atmosphere.

The Symposium includes:

  • daily private lessons

  • daily masterclasses

  • student performances

  • faculty performances

  • guest artist performances

  • HIP Bach perspectives

  • body awareness methods

  • practice techniques

  • performance psychology

Richard Luby founded the Violin Symposium in 2008. Professor of Music at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1979-2013, Dr. Luby was a renowned violinist and a master teacher for over 40 years. Richard Luby had a special interest in the solo violin Sonatas and Partitas of J.S. Bach and performed them, on baroque violin and modern violin, to widespread critical acclaim at the Wigmore Hall in London, Merkin Hall in New York, the Chopin Academy in Warsaw, and throughout the United States, Europe, and Latin America.

All course activities take place on the beautiful campus at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the Kenan Music Building and Person Hall.

For a list of events, please click here. Events are free and open to the public. They are held in Person Recital Hall. Paid parking is available in Swain Lot after 5 p.m. or in lots on Rosemary Street (approx. five minute walk).
